This piece is meant to educate the public on the history and origins of piñatas. The piñata itself is an icon often associated with children’s parties and candy, but they are really much more meaningful and representative of cultural values and customs. The entire ritual of the piñata revolves around religious ideas of a destruction of evil that is often overlooked or unheard of. I want to address this directly by offering an interactive installation of a series of seven piñatas that serve as representations of the seven deadly sins through visual form and experience. The viewer should walk away with a new idea of the history of the piñata and question the symbol itself as a celebratory act.
